The upper house of the French parliament decided to ban beauty contests for children and adolescents under 16 years of age.
Senate stating they are violating this law could be sentenced to imprisonment and fines. The members of the Senate said this step was taken to prevent the exploitation of children.
About the bill proposed prohibition of child beauty pageants by Chantal Jouanno, a former sports minister under President Nicolas Sarkozy.
"Do we allow children to have confidence that their value was based on appearance," said Jouanno in front of the Senate.
"Do not let commercial interests erode social interests," he added.
"The MPs did not moral enforcers, but we have an obligation to protect the interests of the children," said Jouanno.
Prohibition of child beauty pageant is contested by Virginie Kles, members of the Senate of the Socialist Party and the government spokesman who is also the minister spoke for women's rights, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem.
Both assessing sanctions for violations of this law is too heavy.
Under this law, the child beauty pageant organizers under 16 years old could face up to two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros.
The new regulations still require the approval of the lower house before it is applied.
