Lin family patriarch believed daughter-in-law was having affair, Robert Xie trial hears - SMH
Lin family patriarch describes how he felt the day he learned five members of his family were murdered. Nine News.
In the months before five members of a Chinese-Australian family were killed in their beds, the family patriarch came to believe that his daughter-in-law was having a secret extra-marital affair, a Sydney court has heard.
The evidence came on the 10th day of the trial of Lian Bin “Robert” Xie in the NSW Supreme Court.
Mr Xie, 50, is accused of murdering his brother-in-law, Min “Norman” Lin, his sister-in-law, Lily Lin, their two sons Henry and Terry, and the boy’s aunt, Irene in the early hours of July 18, 2009.

It is the Crown case that Mr Xie crept into the Lin family’s home on Boundary Road, North Epping, and murdered them because he felt his brother and sister-in-law were being unfairly favoured by the family patriarch Yang Fei Lin, and his wife.
But on Thursday the court heard that another source of tension within the family may have arisen after Yang Fei Lin read Lily Lin’s diary in late 2008.
A number of diary entries referred to a man named "Rob" for whom Lily had apparently developed strong feelings while working in a pyramid selling scheme. The court heard this was not a reference to Robert Xie.
"Having been trained by Rob these years and lived with him together, made me a lot more familiar with him," Lily Lin said in the diary entry.
"Meanwhile a sense of dependence and feelings towards him. I hate to part with him. I like him. He made my life full of colour and ups and downs. I would never feel lonely and bored. I am used to his existence."
The court heard that, upon discovering this entry, Mr Lin snr photocopied the pages and then confronted his daughter-in-law, who tore them out of the diary and threw them in the bin.
"There are no extra-marital affairs in this family," Mr Lin snr allegedly told his daughter-in-law.
"If you want to do this, get a divorce and do this properly - we will let you go."
According to Mr Lin snr, Lily replied "I'm sorry, I'm sorry ... I like my family, they are very good to me" and promised not to see the man any more.
Mr Lin snr reportedly accepted this promise and pledged not to tell the woman's husband or anyone else about what he had found.
The court heard that, from about this time, Lily's attendance at the family's regular Friday night dinners dropped off significantly, and that she missed a number of family birthdays.
Mr Lin snr said Lily's failure to attend the gatherings was partly because she was working at the family's newsagency.
Later, Mr Lin recalled the morning after the murders when Mr Xie had called him and said ‘‘Daddy, something huge has happened to brother Lin’s family’’.
‘‘The house was surrounded by police ... ambulance and police had set up a circle preventing us from entering,’’ he said.
‘‘I felt that it must have been really, really serious and I just felt like the sky would collapse.
‘‘I just felt like I was being stabbed in the heart.’’
Mr Xie sat crying in the dock as his father-in-law recalled the events.
The trial continues.

Pamela Anderson has stunned guests at the launch of her charity foundation in Cannes by detailing a catalogue of sexual abuse during her childhood.
The revelation came as she unveiled the Pamela Anderson Foundation, which will focus on the environment and animal rights, in front of more than 200 people during the film festival in France on Friday.

"I feel now might be the time to reveal a few of my most painful memories. At the risk of over-exposing myself, again, or being inappropriate, again, I thought I might share with you why I am doing this," the Baywatch star said.
Anderson has previously revealed she was raped when she was 12, but she detailed a further string of abusive incidents, alleging she was molested by a female babysitter at the age of six and gang-raped as a teen.
"I did not have an easy childhood. Despite loving parents, I was molested from age six by a female babysitter ... I went to a friend's boyfriend's house and his older brother decided to teach me backgammon, which led into a back massage, which led into rape. My first heterosexual experience. He was 25 years old and I was 12."
She then added that a high school teenager "decided it would be funny to gang-rape me with six friends. I wanted off this earth."
British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood was on hand to support her friend, but admitted the revelations came as a shock to her.
She told Britain's The Guardian newspaper: "I did not know she had been through all of that. I have known her a long time now and we are really close."

Kremlin flags Ukraine pullback, but NATO doesn't see it
Moscow: The Kremlin announced on Monday that President Vladimir Putin had ordered Russian troops conducting exercises along the Ukrainian border to return to their home bases at the conclusion of the drills, apparently sending another loud signal that Russia is not planning any military action in eastern Ukraine ahead of that country's presidential elections Sunday.
However, the NATO secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said the Western allies had not seen any sign of a withdrawal of Russian forces. During a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels, General Rasmussen noted that it was the third such statement by Mr Putin without any evidence of a pullback of troops or equipment from the Ukrainian border.

The Kremlin statement said Mr Putin had ordered the withdrawal of military units in conducting drills in the Rostov, Belgorod and Bryansk regions of western Russia. At the same time, it called for "the immediate halt of punitive operations and use of force" by the Ukrainian government and demanded "resolution of the various problems through peaceful means alone."
Even as a series of national round-table talks have begun in Ukraine aimed at resolving the country's political crisis, the provisional government in the capital, Kiev, has pressed on with a security operation aimed at suppressing the armed pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. The government refers to the separatists, who have seized some public buildings, as terrorists.
Sporadic violence, including injuries and deaths, has continued throughout eastern Ukraine in recent days. On Sunday night, local news agencies reported that armed pro-Russian separatists had seized a police station in the city of Luhansk.
The Kremlin's call for an end to the Ukrainian government's campaign against the separatists was reiterated by the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov at a news conference in Moscow on Monday.
"We still insist on the first unconditional step: a halt of the so-called anti-terrorism operation, which is turning into actions aimed at terrorising citizens of Ukraine just for their political convictions," Mr Lavrov said.
In a sign of the continuing mistrust, Mr Lavrov warned against any effort by Kiev to use the round-table talks as public window dressing while secretly pursuing other changes in government structure behind the scenes in Parliament.
"If the idea is to use the round tables simply as a folding screen, as a means of letting off steam, while holding the actual reform in a close manner, it will not add trust," he said.
