Japanese lawmakers drinking water puddle

Sonoda Yosuhiro challenged reporters to show that the nuclear decontamination work.


A member of the Japanese parliament to drink water from puddles in a radioactive environment Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. BBC's Tokyo correspondent, Roland Buerk, reported Sonoda seen shaking hands when he drank the water that is said to be taken from puddles in the Fukushima nuclear power complex. He then spent water in the glass in two gulps.

Yosuhiro Sonoda said he decided to drink water after being challenged reporters to prove that the process of nuclear decontamination work as expected. Nearly eight months after the Fukushima nuclear power reactor was severely damaged by the earthquake and tsunami, authorities still impose a ban zone 20 kilometers from the NPP. Tens of thousands of nearby residents were forced to leave their homes.

The Japanese government hopes nuclear reactor is stable and the water in it is no longer boiling before the end of this year. Decontamination area of nuclear power plants is estimated to take tens of years.
