Velvet Revolution leader dies



Former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel has died at the age of 75 years.

Secretary Havel, Sabina Tancecova, said Havel is known as a playwright and dissident died on Sunday morning (18/12) after the illness for years. Havel had led human rights organization, Charter 77.

He led a peaceful resistance movement better known as the Velvet Revolution that overthrew the Soviet communist system in Czechoslovakia in 1989. Havel later became the last president of Czechoslovakia.

Under its leadership, Czechoslovakia into two countries, Czech and Slovakia, in 1993.

Europe lost
Havel who wrote many plays and poetry became the first president of the Czech Republic in 1993 and ruled until 2003.

As president, Havel led the Czech transition to democracy and free market economy. Havel also managed to enter the Czech Republic to the European Union.

European leaders said the loss with the death of Havel. German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the Havel as a great figure of Europe.

"The struggle for freedom and democracy Havel can not be forgotten," said Merkel are great when East Germany was under communist power.

"We, the German people, grateful for the struggles Havel. We are lost," said Merkel.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said it was very sad and Europe are indebted to the figure for Havel.
