Benjamin Medrano denies refusing same-sex marriage even though he did not want to get married.
Mexico's first gay mayor sworn in at a ceremony in the city of Fresnillo.
Mayor Benjamin Medrano said his sexual orientation only becomes a problem when his political opponents used the election campaign in the state of Zacatecas.
Medrano said he hopes to make a difference for the citizens of the city Fresnillo.
In his Twitter account he wrote: "The time has come to listen to your wishes and solve your problem. I am committed to you."
The biggest problem is the city experienced a power struggle between drug cartels operating in the central and northern Mexico.
Two of Mexico's largest criminal organizations - Los Zetas and the Gulf cartel - are involved in a 'war' lengthy pathway for control of drug smuggling at the U.S. border.
Medrano said the fact that he was not involved with a criminal organization would make it do a good job for the citizens of the city Fresnillo.
"What is important for the people is what you do in your personal life. What they want is a good job of the politicians," he told BBC Mundo.

Social development

Medrano came from a very poor family in the state of Zacatecas. He went to the United States at the age of six years, as part of the "artistic group."
He returned to Mexico after several years of finishing school and law school.
She began her career as a singer and opened the first gay nightclub in Fresnillo in Mexico is an area known as the devout Roman Catholic.
He said he did not intend to marry. He denies refusing same-sex marriage, but it indicates that what is acceptable in the capital of Mexico or other countries, may not be acceptable in Zacatecas.
"My agenda is social and human development for all of us who live in Fresnillo, regardless of sexual orientation," he said.
Security is a major concern for the population of Fresnillo, which is inhabited by 200,000 residents.
"First, we must have the police with equipment and better training, so they are not lost to criminal gangs," said Medrano.
He was elected as mayor of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, led by President Enrique Pena Nieto, who took office last December with the promise of reviewing the policy of "war on drugs" that made its predecessor.
