Chinese state media say five people died and more than 30 injured when a vehicle crashed into a crowd in Tiananmen Square in the capital Beijing.
Media said the three passengers in the car as well as two tourists died. Tiananmen Square is currently closed.
There has been no explanation of the cause of the accident.
Photos are published on the internet showing the burning vehicle, similar to a photograph published in the Chinese social media sites, which immediately removed by the government.
The incident occurred in the northern region of the field near the Forbidden City, one of the other tourist destinations in China.
"The driver and two passengers died after a Jeep crashing and burning people," Xinhua news agency reported.
Meanwhile, an eyewitness who was not named told AFP news agency, "I saw the car suddenly swerved and were on the sidewalk.'s Happened so fast and the car seems to hit people."

"I heard an explosion and saw flames. Atmosphere is very scary," he added.
Tiananmen Square is a place Click onpro-democracy protests in 1989 which ended after a military operation.
This field is usually closely guarded as close to a number of offices and is also being used as a venue for the protest.
A number of incidents have occurred, including in 2011 when a man set fire to himself after what officials called a legal dispute.
Two years earlier, three men set fire to themselves in a car at the intersection near Tiananmen Square. Police said the incident was due to a personal matter.
In 2000, some Falun Gong members were detained for protesting in the square.
